10 questions I should ask before starting a bathroom remodel

Define these upfront so you avoid scope creep, surprises behind the walls, and contractor drama.

Your goals and use

  • Why am I remodeling this bathroom (function, aesthetics, resale, accessibility)?
  • Who will use this bathroom over the next 5–10 years (kids, guests, aging-in-place, resalebuyers)?

Budget, scope, and layout

  • What is my all‑in budget, and what’s my contingency (10–20%) for surprises like rot, plumbing, or electrical issues?
  • Am I keeping the current layout or moving walls/plumbing, and do I understand how thatchanges cost and permits?
  • What are my must‑haves vs nice‑to‑haves if I need to cut scope to stay on budget?

Existing conditions and constraints

  • What do I like and dislike about the current bathroom (light, storage, ventilation, space), andwhat specifically must change?
  • Are there structural, plumbing, or electrical constraints (load‑bearing walls, slab, venting)that limit what’s realistic?

Contractor and process

  • Is the contractor licensed, insured, and experienced specifically with bathrooms, and canthey show recent similar work and references?
  • What is the detailed scope, timeline, and payment schedule (incl. how delays, changeorders, and mistakes are handled)?

Quality, waterproofing, and warranty

  • What waterproofing system, materials, and installation standards will be used in wet areas, and what labor and product warranties are included (and in writing)?

If you share whether this is a primary, kids’, or guest bath and rough budget range, a tailoredquestion list and sequencing for your project can follow.
